death in 1972.He had 5 children :Will Wess DONNEL ( buried in California) Jimmy Lee DONNEL.(buried in the Portales Cemetery) George Odell DONNEL(buried in the portales Cemetery) Eula Jane DONNEL.(buried in the Portales Cemetery) The family farmed around Portales and Clovis area. Date: Monday, September 27, 1999. Subject: Roosevelt County Query. I would like to correspond with any descendants of Willie E.(possibly "Electra") HARWELL who married Edward Benjamin "E.B." LAUGHTER December 20, 1887 in DeSoto County, MS. Willie and E.B. would live in Arkansas around the 1900's and were in Mora Co., New Mexico by the 1920's. By 1935, they would be in Portales, New Mexico. Children of this family
were Tracy LAUGHTER, Laurie LAUGHTER, Malcolm LAUGHTER, Benjamin LAUGHTER, DeWitt LAUGHTER, Mary LAUGHTER, Abner LAUGHTER, and Alline LAUGHTER. My line descends from "Willie's" brother, James HARWELL. Regards, Alicia Brown

Date: Sunday, September 05, 1999. Subject: Roosevelt County Query. My grandfather. John Wesley RODGERS homesteaded in Roosevest Co. Daughter Alma Elizabeth RODGERS born 7 Oct. 1907 in Ok. but died July 1908 and buried at Portales on the homestead. John Wesley RODGERS was married to Martha Pandora RODGERS aka Dora. They had a son, William Newton RODGERS born10 Sec. 1908 at Clovis N.M. The homesteading failed and they returned to Ok. Any data on how to locate the homestead legal description, location, grave and any records or data on this family appreciated. Have a horn artifact inscribed, "found 1910 in New Mexico". Date: Saturday, August 21, 1999. Subject: Roosevelt Co., NM query. Seeking information on Isaac "Ike" Knight and wife Frances Belle Johnson who were early residents of Roosevelt Co. They came from Laclede Co., MO. He
was born 1870, she 1876. Believe they were both buried in Portales. They had one known child, Nettie Myrtle Knight, b. 1896, d. 1938 and is buried in Portales with her husband Edward M. Kornegay. Thanks, Ed Purcell.

7.16.1999 Searching for information on Dr. Henry Harmon TALLEY(dentist) and his wife Sefronia Josephine "Josie" (MURDOCK) TALLEY, both died in Roosevelt Co, NM, possibly in the town of Portales or Garrison. Henry died 12 February 1925 and his wife 14 November 1928. They had previously lived in Farwell & Whitesboro, TX, both were natives of Marshall Co., TN. Does anyone the exact place of death & cemetery where these two people died and are buried. Any help on these people would be appreciated. Nancy A. Dicus Beck

6.24.1999 ROBERTS, Thomas H. Seeking information about my grandfather who went to the Clovis area from Tom Green County, TX after 1903. He died there sometime between approx. 1908 and 1911. He was possible related to a Will Roberts who was a rancher and depot agent in Clovis in the early 1900s. He was between 38 and 40 yrs old at his death. He possibly did ranch work. Any help you can offer will be greatly appreciated. Jean Bowman

5.20.1999 I am looking for information on JR WRIGHT & ANNA WRIGHT. Both are buried at Mt. Ida Cemetery at Dora, NM (justt outside of Portales, NM). The only information I have is the inscription on the tombstone: JR Wright, 1858-1928 & Anna A Wright, 1874-1943. If anyone has information on these two Wright's, please contact me. 4.28.1999 Looking for information regarding CALEB HUFFSTUTLER, born Washington County

4.17.1999 I am looking for information on my gr grandfather - William Milton Twiggs - who came from Billings, MO in between 1900 & 1909 to Portales and farmed many acres of strawberries. His wife - Nancy Elizabeth Twiggs died early and was buried in Portales leaving him to raise 5 young daughters with his mother. He later moved to Albuq. to become a barber. Contact Lauren

4.3.1999 My Grand father was HENRY H DANIEL who lived in Portales, New Mexico in 1957 as that was the only time I had visited him. He was married first to DELCENIA HUBBARD then divorced he married a woman from France (name unkown). I believe he was also a member of the Sheriffs Dept in Portales in 1957. 4.2.1999 Subject: Moses and Virgie Hawkins. Last home site in roosevelt county in Floyd New Mexico. We currently hold a family reunion in June of each year. This year it will be June 12, 11 am -6 pm at Floyd, New Mexico Community Center. I would help with any connections I have with this family. Also Henry E Pace SR & Jr. Jr was my dad. 3.30.1999 I am looking for information regarding my great aunt, Gertrude Pennington
BARNARD. She was born May 30, 1879 in Kansas to her parents, Joshua and
Catherine Pennington. Later, Joshua took his family to Oakwood, Dewey,
Oklahoma where Gertrude met and married William BARNARD. They settled on a

3.3.1999 I am looking for WILLIAM PRESTON. He was married to RACHEL DELCENA SMITH. His son was ROBERT AMASA PRESTON and he was married to EASIE INEZ TAYLOR. They were divorced and she married to Luther NUTT. The Preston children were LEOENARD, HAZEL, SARAH, HOPE. HAZEL was married to BARNEY McCABE, father SILAS McCABE. SARAH m. LINEOL WHITE, LEONARD m. 2.28.1999 I understand that Portales once had a sanitorium, etc. for people stricken with
TB. My grandfather's first wife died there about 1920/21, She is buried
there and I find no one doing lookups in this county. Where can I write for

In the Portales, New Mexico cemetery there are tombstones for the following:
ROLAN, Charles F., 1872 - 1954; Mary Rolan, 1888 - 1955.
ROLAN, Henry H., Pfc US Army WW II, Aug. 28, 1920 - July 2, 1975.

In the Grubaugh story in the High Plains History book it reads: Elston Grubaugh married Ima Joe Rolan, daughter of Charlie and Mary Frances Rolan of Clovis, in Marcy of 1949. These people may or may not be the ones your are searching for...

2.11.1999 I am looking for information on Benjamin W. Miller and his wife Martha Albertine
Carmichael Miller. I know that they moved to Portales, New Mexico in 1903. They had 4 sons. Martha Albertine Carmichael Miller is related to me and I do not know when she died or any information on her sons. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Rebecca Merritt

1.23.1999 I'm looking for my missing great grandmother Effie Van Hooser HILL. (DOB 9/8/1883). Per family lore, Effie moved to Portales New Mexico in the mid to late 1940's from Roswell. She reportedly moved there to be closer to one of her children, possibly a HILL or an ISHAM or ISAM. Thank you! Ramona

In the High Plains History Book on page 599 in the Portales Cemetery there is a tombstone that reads:

HILL, Charly, Nov. 20, 1878-Apr. 21, 1975; Effie, Aug. 5, 1889- Apr. 23, 1964; married July 17, 1911.

This tombstone is in a group with the Hamlin Hill family. Hamlin Hill was an early rancher in the area that later became Roosevelt County. The birth date you gave me does not match the one on this tombstone.
This may or may not be the Effie Hill you are searching for. Harold Kilmer

1.6.1999 CANON (CANNON), LUTHER EDDIE : Looking for information on husband's great
grandfather. Was born Feb 2,1861, Ellis Co,TX, moved to Roosevelt County, NM in 1917. He was an early cattleman of the Taiban Community. He died Aug 28,1956 in Portales, NM at the age of 95 after falling & breaking his hip. 1st wife's name was Nettie Carola Worthen Canon, b: Jan 9,1883 Denton Co,TX , d: Nov 30,1906 somewhere in New Mexico, possibly close to the Texas border
near Adobe Walls,TX. Daughter : Vada Canon 2nd wife's name not sure o,f possibly Julia / Julie . Had 1 daughter named Mareta Bell, died 1997. Contact Dechmil@aol.com

1.3.1999 I'm looking for information on William STEELE (b1886, TX) and his wife Flora Ann BANDHOLTZ (b1891, TX) who supposedly homesteaded in the Clovis, NM area in 1910, probably in Roosevelt County. The 1910 US Census for NM is not indexed. I looked through the individual pages of the census but could not find them - it would have been easy to overlook them. I would appreciate any information on them, an index to the 1910 NM Census, or how to trace a homestead
application/claim. I understand that they did not stay on the land long enough to complete their claim requirements. Contact Paul Carter
