I have family that settled in Roosevelt
Co. around l900. Judge James (Jim) WALLIS and several people in Elida are
mentioned in a book titled "Sagas of The Wallace Clan" now out of
print. It may be in your library there. Written by George Wallis.
If you know of anyone researching the WALLIS surname, I would appreciate
hearing from them. Also the surname BELL. This is a small piece out of
the book:
This little cow town, where homesteaders were
chopping to pieces the Jeff White and Littlefield ranches, was near the county
line of Roosevelt and Chaves counties. The nearest county seats and law were at
Portales, twenty-five miles to the northeast, and at Roswell, sixty-five miles to the
southwest. Jim Wallis was elected Justice of the Peace to serve the ninety-mile
gap between the two county seats. He backed by a deputy sheriff named Milt
Kornega. While Roy Bean was "Law West of the Pecos" 200 miles farther
south, Jim Wallis became law east of the Pecos for half of two counties.
I am interested in anyone who is researching Justice of the Peace, Jim Wallis.
Thanks Barb Wallis
I
believe that Martin L. MOODY (my grandfather) was the first magistrate of Elida, N.M. He reportedly laid out the town and
assisted in its charter. My father (also named Martin L. MOODY) was born
in Elida 2/18/1906. Grandmother Eunice Rufana (Laxson) Moody
died in April 1908, during childbirth and her gravesite should also be in
Elida. Grandfather was distressed from the loss of his wife and returned
to Texas with all of the children. I am
interested in the early history of Elida and confirmation of the above
information if possible. Sincerely, DeWitt
H. Moody, 1729 Wind Harbor Road, Orlando, Florida 32809

Looking
for information on a family that lived in Portales in 1943, or
Roswell. The families name is Daniel or
Daniels not sure of the spelling.
Unsure of husbands first name. Do know the wife's name was Clara
Daniel. They
had a daughter named Nellie Daniel could have been in school there in 1943.
The reason for me looking for these people is that my father, who Edward
Edgar Robinson, stated that these people were his family. And when I
received
his military records it show them as of next to kin. And when he got out
of
the military he went to Portales and received his selective service card at
1118
College Ave. If I could find the daughter maybe she could give us
some
information on why her mother was put as his mother. When I received his
card from Social Security it stated that his mother was a Mary Rodriguez and
father's name was Charles Robinson. If you could search for some information
for me I sure could use the help. Thank you Mary

Looking
for Leona M. (Swearingen) & Emmett Potts*. Last seen in 1958-60,
they lived in Portales, NM. I was told that Leona was buried in small
cemetery outside of Portales, thought to be Elida, next to her mother
Nancy Jane (Titsworth) Swearingen who died in 1943. If anyone can shed
some
light on these people, I would be greatly appreciated. Leona was my Great
Aunt and Nancy was my Great Grandmother, Father's side. Thanks in
advance.

Thanks
for all your trouble, Janelle Foster found them in Causey, NM and
also she found that their name was PROPS*
instead of Potts, because my
GGrandfather James S. is buried there too
Looking
for any information or stories about K.K. RUNNELS. Lived on his ranch in
the northeastern corner of Roosevelt County from 1910 (?) until he died in 1967.
He was said to have been quite outspoken and politically minded, writing many
letters to the editor of the State Line Tribune for a column called "Sage
of the Sandhills". He probably spent more of his time in Texico, Parmer County Texas. Have heard he had a feed store in
Texico, and there is a city park named for him there as well. Would
welcome any bits of information about him - OR - anything about his daughter,
Kathleen Runnels who lived near Texico, and was socially active - even working
for Congressman Harold Runnels for several years. Contact Steve

Seeking
any information regarding Frederick David and Ruth SPINKS AUBURG.
They were my grandparents. They lived in Portales and near Elida in the late
1930's and early 1940's and moved back and forth from the Tell, and Childress,
TX areas. Fred had been a farmer, but was in
failing health by that time.
Their 2 youngest sons Joe Don and Billy Bob were still at home with them.
Possibly, Marshall "Dean" was with them also. Thanks in advance
for any
information available. Contact Jane

I am looking for information about Joseph KNIGHTON or KNIGHTEN. He moved from Alabama and lived in New Mexico in late 1800's-early 1900's. I have a
postcard sent from Banks, New Mexico around 1910. I also have pictures of
Joseph. He was a son of William and Sarah Knighten of Northeast Alabama. Please contact me if you have any
information about him or Banks, New Mexico. My name is Bob
Austin. My mailing
address is P O Box 114, Jacksonville, AL 36265.
Answer to one question:
There was a Banks, New Mexico in Roosevelt County in 1910. It was north and a little east of
Ft.
Sumner, NM nearly due east of the Sumner Lake Dam. It may have been on the Almogordo Creek.
